Raise your hand if you’ve stood in front of a wardrobe full of clothes and genuinely believed you had nothing to wear.
Here’s what I’ve since figured out: a wardrobe full of random clothes you never quite feel good in is infinitely worse than a small, carefully chosen collection of pieces you absolutely love. More stuff is not the answer. Better stuff — fewer things that actually work together — that’s the answer.
That’s the whole idea behind a capsule wardrobe. And the best part? You don’t need a big budget to build one. I’ve found everything I need across SHEIN, ASOS, H&M, Zara, and Amazon. Click the shop links under each category to find the exact pieces!
What Is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a small, intentional collection of versatile pieces that all work together. Every item can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. A typical capsule has around 30–40 items which can create well over 100 outfit combinations.
Step 1 — Start With a Wardrobe Audit
Before you buy a single thing, pull everything out and sort into three piles: Keep (fits well, you actually wear it), Donate/sell (doesn’t fit, haven’t worn in a year), and Maybe (put in a box for 30 days — if you don’t miss it, donate).
Sell your unwanted items on Vinted, Depop, or eBay and use the money to fund your upgrades.
Step 2 — Define Your Personal Style
Ask yourself: Where do I spend most of my time? What colours do I feel most confident in? What’s my style — classic, casual, feminine, minimal, bold? Your answers will guide every purchasing decision.
Step 3 — Choose Your Colour Palette
Choose a neutral base plus two or three accent colours — and stick to it. Mo’s suggestion: Cream + black + blush pink + gold accents. Warm, versatile, and works for every occasion.
Step 4 — The Essential Pieces

- 2 white or cream tops (one fitted, one relaxed)

Step 5 — Shop Intentionally and Affordably
Shop your own wardrobe first — you might already own some pieces on your list. Buy secondhand where possible — Vinted, Depop, and eBay are gold mines for quality pieces at a fraction of retail price. Use cashback when shopping online — Rakuten gives you cashback at ASOS, H&M, and most major fashion retailers.
The Magic of a Capsule Wardrobe in Practice
Five pieces: white shirt, black tailored trousers, jeans, camel blazer, white trainers. From those five items you can create six or more complete outfits. That’s the capsule wardrobe working exactly as it should.
Mo’s Honest Take
Building a capsule wardrobe changed how I feel about getting dressed every morning. I spend less on clothes than I ever have. I look more put-together than I ever have. And getting dressed takes about three minutes. More sparkle, less stress.
